St. Thomas continues to lead the way in the electric vehicle (EV) industry. The City is thrilled to welcome Vianode, a Norwegian manufacturer of sustainable synthetic graphite, to Yarmouth Yards – marking their first facility in North America. Graphite is the largest component by weight in lithium-ion batteries, including in those manufactured in the nearby Volkswagen-backed PowerCo SE gigafactory. By bringing this advanced technology to St. Thomas, Vianode is helping to create skilled jobs, boost the local economy, and strengthen the City’s role in the EV supply chain.
“St. Thomas has long been a leader in the automotive industry, and now we are leading the charge in the North American EV supply chain,” said Mayor Joe Preston. “Vianode’s decision to invest here is a testament to our City’s talent, innovation, and commitment to a sustainable future.” The facility is designed with environmental sustainability in mind, producing synthetic graphite with a 90 per cent lower CO₂ footprint than conventional methods. Construction is underway with production slated for 2028. Vianode’s presence at Yarmouth Yards further establishes St. Thomas as a clean tech and EV innovation hub, attracting global investment and supporting a bright, sustainable future for residents and businesses alike. This investment of $3.2 billion from Vianode to establish a new, state-of-the-art facility in St. Thomas marks Vianode’s entrance into the North American market and is a major milestone in the plan to build the most competitive, resilient and self-reliant economy in the G7, helping to protect Ontario’s economy and Ontario workers in the face of tariffs and economic uncertainty. Vianode’s investment will create nearly 300 new, good-paying jobs in its initial phase, with 1,000 jobs expected once the facility is at full operational capacity, generating broad economic benefits across southwestern Ontario. “Today’s announcement is a historic milestone for southwestern Ontario and a major win for workers, creating good-paying manufacturing jobs today and for generations to come,” said Premier Doug Ford. “We’re proud to welcome Vianode to St. Thomas as we strengthen our province’s competitive advantage in a critical industry and build the most competitive, resilient, self-reliant economy in the G7.” Click here to read the full media release.
