How Many Times Can You Go Around a Roundabout?
Mike from St. Thomas Economic Development is back with another little update—and this one’s spinning out of control (literally)! What starts as a fun challenge to see how many times you can loop a roundabout quickly turns into a lesson in traffic safety—complete with a surprise visit from the St. Thomas Police Service 👮♂️. From being pulled over mid-spin to getting expert advice straight from the Chief of Police, this episode covers everything you actually need to know about navigating roundabouts safely in St. Thomas: ✔️ Choosing the right lane ✔️ When to yield ✔️ Signaling correctly ✔️ What to do when emergency vehicles appear ✔️ Why roundabouts are becoming more common If you’ve ever been confused (or mildly terrified) by roundabouts, this one’s for you. 🎥 Watch to the end for a great breakdown of how roundabouts improve traffic flow, reduce collisions, and even help the environment. And to set the record straight - In Ontario, there's no specific law limiting the number of times you can circle a roundabout. However, driving around more than twice could be considered careless driving. If a police officer observes excessive circling, they may pull you over and investigate, potentially under suspicion of impaired driving. Thank you to the St. Thomas Police Services for helping us create this informative Roundabout Roundup to promote safe roundabout driving in the community! Join Mike from St. Thomas Economic Development for a fun and informative ride through the city's growing network of multi-use paths including the Whistlestop Trail! Along the way, Mike runs into Councillor Steve Wookey, who shares his passion for accessible active transportation and the community vision behind the trail system. They talk about how walking, biking, and rolling (in all forms) support physical and mental wellness — and how every new path adds value to life in St. Thomas.
Then, Mike meets up with local cyclist Harrison Cole for a scenic spin around town and a hands-on demo of the city’s new bike lockers near the St. Thomas Public Library. Learn how to use the Movatic app to safely store your ride while you explore downtown — maybe even stop for a pint at Caps Off Brewing 🍻. ✨ Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist, a casual walker, or just curious about how St. Thomas is planning for a more connected, people-powered future — this video’s for you. 🛠 Topics Covered:
Grab some popcorn! We’re back with another behind-the-scenes update from the St. Thomas Megasite—this time, we’re paving the way to progress!
Join Meredith Woodhouse from the City of St. Thomas Industrial Development Team as she checks in with the hardworking teams from RVA, L82 Construction, Capital Paving, and MTE Consultants during a night paving session on the Highbury Avenue expansion. From traffic control and compaction rollers to infrared joint heaters and nuclear density gauges, you'll get a close-up look at the process, precision, and people it takes to bring this vital infrastructure project to life. You’ll hear directly from: Amro (RVA) on the milestone moment of nearing project completion Rodrigo (L82 Construction) on traffic safety and setup Roger & Ian (Capital Paving) on paving techniques, teamwork, and what makes the job rewarding Sarima (MTE Consultants) on quality assurance and testing the asphalt mix And Meredith shows us how line painting wraps it all up This project represents not just a new road, but a foundation for the future of St. Thomas. Join Mike from St. Thomas Economic Development for another on-site update—this time from a growing stormwater management (SWM) pond at the future Volkswagen PowerCo industrial site, Yarmouth Yards. But first, he bumps into Sarah Lynch, the ever-busy Downtown Development and Engagement Officer supporting the St. Thomas Downtown Development Board, to chat about the 11th Annual Nostalgia Nights Classic Car Show happening July 12th on Talbot Street. Expect thousands of classic cars, tribute acts, chill and cheer stations, and vibrant downtown energy you don’t want to miss!
Then, it’s over to the northwest corner of the megasite, where Mike meets Peter and Ryan from Arcadis to talk all things civil engineering. They break down the importance of stormwater management, massive culverts (yes, big enough to drive through), and what it takes to design a stormwater system for one of Ontario’s largest industrial sites. Get a glimpse of UBERPOND - this 35-acre SWM pond is on par with Lake Margaret in terms of size and will, over time, take on a similar naturalized state, complete with 13 km of trails and pathways through Yarmouth Yards. Lake Margaret was an operational gravel pit until around 2000 and is now a popular destination in the city. From big pipes to even bigger puns, this episode delivers both insight and humour. 🤪 Whether you're into classic cars, infrastructure innovation, or future-forward development in St. Thomas, there’s something here for everyone.
